    Applications of system identification methods to the prediction of helicopter stability, control and handling characteristics

    A set of results on rotorcraft system identification is described. Flight measurements collected on an experimental Puma helicopter are reviewed and some notable characteristics highlighted. Following a brief review of previous work in rotorcraft system identification, the results of state estimation and model structure estimation processes applied to the Puma data are presented. The results, which were obtained using NASA developed software, are compared with theoretical predictions of roll, yaw and pitching moment derivatives for a 6 degree of freedom model structure. Anomalies are reported. The theoretical methods used are described. A framework for reduced order modelling is outlined

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links fieldBACKGROUND: Most patients only have three measurements of blood pressure before being labelled as hypertensive. This may lead to inaccurate classification, unnecessary treatment and dilution in treatment benefit for the population. Aim: To examine the accuracy of current methods of diagnosing mild hypertension, and to explore ways to improving targeting of antihypertensive treatment without entailing lengthy observation. DESIGN: Re-analysis of published data. METHODS: We tested current diagnostic methods using the data for 3965 individuals who were followed for a year in the placebo arm of the MRC Mild Hypertension Trial. We calculated the proportion selected for treatment by current methods and the diagnostic accuracy, using average blood pressure beyond 6 months as representing 'true' long-term blood pressure. We examined the benefit of averaging blood pressures, of prolonging observation modestly and of estimating within-person blood pressure variability. RESULTS: Prolonging observation to 3 months selects a smaller (by about 12%) proportion of the sample for treatment, a proportion similar to that defined as 'truly' hypertensive. The diagnostic accuracy of current methods is poor, with up to 69% discrepancy in classification. This discrepancy was improved by up to 18% in absolute terms by prolonging observation to 3 months and using average blood pressures. Identifying those individuals with low within-person variability allows marked improvement in the prediction of 'true' hypertension. DISCUSSION: Although some inaccuracy in the diagnosis of hypertension is inevitable, observation for 3 months, averaging blood pressures and estimating within-person blood pressure variability can markedly improve upon current practice

    Human factor implications of the Eurocopter AS332L-1 Super Puma cockpit

    The purpose of this paper is to identify and describe some of the human factor problems which can occur in the cockpit of a modern civilian helicopter. After examining specific hardware and software problems in the cockpit design of the Eurocopter (Aerospatiale) AS332L-1 Super Puma, the author proposes several principles that can be used to avoid similar human factors problems in the design of future cockpits. These principles relate to the use and function of warning lights, the design of autopilots in two-pilot aircraft, and the labeling of switches and warning lights, specifically with respect to abbreviations and translations from languages other than English. In the final section of the paper, the author describes current trends in society which he suggests should be taken into consideration when designing future aircraft cockpits

    AbstractWe describe a case of a 45-year-old man presenting with acute myocardial infarction investigated by computed tomography coronary angiography. Interestingly all three coronary arteries arose from the right coronary cusp. The left anterior descending artery (LAD) subtended an acute angle from the aortic root, associated with significant kinking and stenosis at the ostium, before passing anteriorly, taking a sub-pulmonic course and descending in the anterior interventricular groove. The distal vessel was small with an atrophic appearance. The circumflex artery followed a retro-aortic route, before trifurcating to supply the lateral and posterior walls of the left ventricle. The right coronary artery was normal. Given his unstable presentation and the potentially lethal course of the LAD, he was referred for grafting of the LAD vessel which successfully ameliorated his symptoms and has thus far prevented recurrent myocardial infarction.<Learning objective: Computed tomography coronary angiography is becoming increasingly accessible to physicians for the investigation of patients with suspected coronary disease and the planning of surgery. As such, coronary anomalies are likely to be encountered more frequently, and it is important to appreciate their clinical significance.

    Patterns and causes of food waste in the hospitality and food service sector: food waste prevention insights from Malaysia

    Food waste has formidable detrimental impacts on food security, the environment, and the economy, which makes it a global challenge that requires urgent attention. This study investigates the patterns and causes of food waste generation in the hospitality and food service sector, with the aim of identifying the most promising food waste prevention measures. It presents a comparative analysis of five case studies from the hospitality and food service (HaFS) sector in Malaysia and uses a mixed-methods approach. This paper provides new empirical evidence to highlight the significant opportunity and scope for food waste reduction in the HaFS sector. The findings suggest that the scale of the problem is even bigger than previously thought. Nearly a third of all food was wasted in the case studies presented, and almost half of it was avoidable. Preparation waste was the largest fraction, followed by buffet leftover and then customer plate waste. Food waste represented an economic loss equal to 23% of the value of the food purchased. Causes of food waste generation included the restaurants' operating procedures and policies, and the social practices related to food consumption. Therefore, food waste prevention strategies should be twofold, tackling both the way the hospitality and food service sector outlets operate and organise themselves, and the customers’ social practices related to food consumption
